Which Camp 101?

Our best advice to parents looking for a summer camp is, DO YOUR HOMEWORK! Thoroughly evaluate several camps always asking yourself, “Does this camp support and express my values?” Specific considerations here are:

  • The directors’ philosophy
  • Your child’s personality and interests
  • Your child’s developmental needs

One parent said to us, “You remind me of me!” That is a good fit!

We know that your main concern is: “Who will care when I’m not there?” We all agree it is your job as a parent to discover if the right “safety nets” are in place (both physical and emotional). Please ask, “Who will ensure that my child has fun AND learns life lessons?” You should have a real feeling of comfort about, “Who will guard my child’s tender feelings while he is acting invincible?” If you feel at ease that the directors of the camp you are considering are a good match, go on to reflect: How does the camp partner with parents? What is the level of communication? Of cooperation? Who will I talk to if I have a question or worry? Is there a designated parent liaison who understands the concerns of parents and knows the developmental needs of children? Is this someone who has the authority to ensure follow-through by staff?

The bottom line: It’s not about where friends are going or what camp is popular in the neighborhood. It’s not about external facilities – rather it is about intrinsic philosophy. Do you feel comfortable entrusting your child to these camp professionals?

Do they remind you of you?

If so, then ask for references! You can contact the ACA or you can ask the camp director for the names of camper families in your area. Those with firsthand knowledge of the camp can confirm that you have indeed found the right fit.
