An important part of our camp culture includes practicing habits of the heart. Camp is a community rooted in caring and compassion, and campers learn that what we do affects those around us. They come to believe that each of us can make a difference in the lives of others.

Many children will never embrace the enormous impact of camp on their lives, because they won’t have the opportunity to attend camp. We do activities at camp that enable our campers to understand that they can help provide a camp experience for underserved kids and that they can participate in acts of kindness --by swimming laps to fund camperships, by donating toys and books, by creating care packages for children in the hospital, by decorating sweatshirts for the homeless, and countless other caring projects. Raising both awareness and money to send underprivileged children to camp is consistent with everything we value at Coleman Country.

The Coleman Family actively supports programs that help provide children in need the edge to succeed in life through the summer camp experience.

SCOPE

Ross is a board member of SCOPE, Summer Camp Opportunities Provide an Edge – which has funded more than 10,000 children at not-for-profits camp in the past 15 years. The campers served by SCOPE escape from urban settings to secure camp environments which foster positive self-esteem, strong self-confidence, and appropriate social skills. They are inner city children who are selected by their teachers as good students with great potential.

It costs $500 to send a child to a SCOPE camp for two weeks.

Project Morry

One of the Coleman Family’s favorite camp destinations is Project Morry, which guarantees four years of camp and year-round mentoring and programming to encourage economically disadvantaged youth to cultivate their dreams and change their lives. Each summer, the Colemans pledge 25 cents for every lap swum by campers and staff during Morry’s Swim-a-thon. Last year, they added an additional $5,000+ to their annual contribution in honor of Coleman Country campers.

Project Morry is a SCOPE camp; it costs $500 to send a child for two weeks.

Appel Farm

Another of the Coleman Family’s charitable camp endeavors is Appel Farm, a not-for-profit summer arts residential camp that feeds the creative talents of children who express not only an aptitude but a love of art. The Schwartz Family Campership Art Fund sends children to Appel Farm each summer, at the same time commemorating the profound love of art of Marla’s parents, Sylvia and Solomon Schwartz, and her sister, Siri Mills-Beierlein. This fund was created to combine their devotion to cultivating youth art appreciation with the other family passion of bringing life-changing experiences to children in a camp environment. Local children complete an application and essay in collaboration with their local school district and school social worker to receive funding. The Schwartz Fund is managed by the American Camp Association.

It costs $1,000 to send a child to Appel Farm for four weeks.
