Promoting Healthy Competition, Celebrating Effort
On The Ranch, we promote healthy competition—giving campers a chance to accept challenges that lead to teamwork and personal bests. We do so because we know that it is essential for kids to not only lose gracefully, but also to win with poise! We find that by helping campers overcome adversity, we endorse spirited participation and avoid excessive rivalry. So do we compete? Yes. But we are not “driven” by competition.
We know that healthy competition is an important element in learning about how to grow up. By competing in a secure, positive setting, kids learn the crucial life lesson “you win some, you lose some,” and they develop the ability to accept both outcomes with humility. In the real world, competition is a factor in everyday life. By giving campers the tools, language, and experience to handle competitive situations appropriately, we help set them up for a lifetime of success.
In Coleman Country, our focus is on celebrating effort. We value direction, not perfection. Here, campers get to choose activities without needing to be expert in them. Sportsmanship and cooperation are our watchwords as we encourage contribution without judging outcomes. It always comes down to this question: “Did you have a good time?”
